Good idea!
The site should work just fine on the iPhone, but I recognize that isn’t ideal. We will do a mobile CSS file eventually, but it isn’t high on the queue (vote this up if you want it to be).
We don’t have the resources to write a native app ourselves, but if someone is interested in writing an app we could work with them to make an API available.

Nice Site so far :)
I would suggest categories and sub - categories for questions. such as laptops / desktops / peripherals . then by model if known

We will get there eventually. As people contribute content about a wider variety of devices, the navigation system will have to get deeper. Until then, simple is good!

Make links in questions/answers pop up in a new browser window.
I posted some web addresses in an answer. They show up as links, and when clicked they open the linked page in the current browser window. IMO it would be better to have them open in a new window to make it easier to return to Answers after possibly following a few more links within.

What does everyone else think about this? Some people have very strong reactions on this topic. I’m flexible, and technically it’s easy to implement this.

Anything is welcome on Answers as long as it helps make devices work longer. Hacks and mods are a grey area.
I actually don’t need to create a section for anything— you will create sections yourself by adding tags and asking questions about devices. The system will automatically create pages for each new topic, filling it with all the relevantly tagged content.
We do need help writing devices, though. So get your rep up a little higher and then make some!

I suggest that when someone votes something down that should leave a comment to justify!
In these way the reason could be a valid one and be used by the user that posted the question/ answers and correct future posts, or the post be better explained or even the vote down be by wrong reasons.

Have some language system
I think that while the site should work in English, you should be able to specify what languages you can translate in your profile. Then, if a question needs translating there can be a button near "History, Edit, Flag, Comment" called "Request Translation." When pressed, all the users who speak that language are sent an e-mail asking them to come and help translate it into English so the community can help solve it.

Accepting an Answer should be obligatory
The 'unresolved' section of iFixit answers is growing as askers of questions don't accept answers. I understand if a question is not yet answered it should remain unresolved until it is resolved. I suggest that in order for people to receive the reputation they deserve, once an answer is posted, an email is sent to the asker asking them if it is correct and that if so they should accept it. It should be sent once a week so they will check and realise their question has been answered so they can accept it.

We want to strongly encourage people to accept answers, but it does happen that none of the answers fixed the actual problem. I only want people to accept answers if they actually have a resolution.
That said, we do remove questions from the unresolved tab once an answer gets enough votes from the community.
We are definitely open to emailing people reminding them to accept an answer— if this is something people want. What does everyone think?

accept tags the way delicious does, single line space separated
This way you don't get what i did. Really long tags that will never match anything.

Good idea! How many people want this? Vote for this if you’d like us to prioritize it.
For the moment, just ask a related question, tag it with ‘tip’ and post the tip as the answer.

Mobile app?
Well along with similar ideas for a mobile optimized site, how about a mobile app? I guess you guys as Mac+iPhone people would go with iPhone, but myself an Android user obviously I would want that. An app would be great with easy access to repair manuals and links to parts. If you charged a little for it you'd get a lot from mobile repair people, it'd be useful to check if parts are in stock, and quickly look up guides.

ESD guidelines
In the interest of long-lived electronics devices, how about a page on electrostatic discharge (ESD) precautions?
I just emailed about this via the Contact page, then discovered this section. Sorry for the duplication!

Have a section for software answers
We need a section for software answers and hardware answers or can we just put them in together

This is certainly something we’re considering. We want to keep the site hardware focused, but we may set up another site at some point to handle those types of questions. For the moment, we want to keep questions here focused on things that will make hardware last longer. Software questions are allowed that are directly related to that, but not general software troubleshooting.
